1948 Jaguar MkIV 3.5 Litre DHC £89,950

No Collection is complete without the sweeping pre-war elegance of Drophead Jaguar MkIV. This rare example is one of only 184 RHD models produced for the home market. It has been the subject of a meticulous, nut and bolt UK restoration in the past with sufficient time and money lavished on it to produce a really stunning motor car with every single possible item renewed or refurbished.

There are numerous photographs detailing all the work which confirm originality has been retained in all important major respects. The result is close to perfection. A truly exquisite restoration which looks as if it might have been finished only yesterday. Never seen rain.

To verify the quality of the rebuild, the car is accompanied by a number of official concours score sheets from the "Jaguar Clubs of North America" where it consistently scored over 99.5 points with a best score of 99.82. This translates into a near perfect car, for concours purposes.

Originally registered through Henlys, London to a Mr. R. A. Chalk on 14th October 1948, the car left the factory on 30th September 1948 in Birch Grey. The actual build was signed off on 17th August. The car is then picked up in California in 1999, by 2005 was in the hands of Jeff Egner of Reno, a Jaguar Collector who solely used it for show purposes and concourses d'elegance in the USA. It was finally repatriated to its homeland in 2011.

It is attractively liveried in immaculate Rossa Corsa exterior paintwork with superb red hide upholstery, red carpets and excellent walnut veneer door cappings and dashboard. This flagship model sports the fabulous and silent 3.5 Litre six cylinder engine. Driving equipment includes Lucas lighting, twin SU carburettors, Air-Conditioning and a complete and comprehensive fitted tool kit in the boot lid.

A Heritage certificate is present proving this is a matching numbers Jaguar, also an
owner's instruction manual, data sheets and a service manual,
in addition to the paperwork previously mentioned. The car has just been MoT tested and has benefited from re-spoked wire wheels.

This 3.5 litre Jaguar is simply outstanding and drives exceptionally well. One of the best of its kind in existence worldwide.

NOTE. If desired there is a Power Steering (electrical unit) that could be installed for £4000 on this car.

Historical Information

The Jaguar Mark IV was manufactured from 1945 to 1949. The model was a re-launch of a pre-War SS Jaguar. Spurred on by growing demand, Jaguar turned its back on Swallow Sidecars' coachbuilding tradition, in 1937 announcing a range of steel-bodied 1½, 2½ and 3½-litre models on new chassis frames. A luxurious drophead coupé was an addition to the line-up, featuring an ingenious three-position convertible top affording the occupants a choice of open, closed or 'de ville' style motoring. The horsehair-lined hood was substantial, giving the cabin an air of saloon-like cosiness when erected.

Production of the Mark IV Dropheads continued after the war until September 1948. Only 184 examples of the right-hand drive 3½-litre Drophead were built for the home market making them very rare and highly sought after today. The post-war cars were similar in almost all respects to their pre-war counterparts and mechanical variations were essentially only to compression ratio and gearing. The 3½-litre model had a top speed of 91mph and, carefully driven, would return 18mpg.
